For-profit Apollo Group, owner of the world's largest university (Universtiy of Phoenix) and the loan company, Sallie Mae are using political donations to get their way on Capital Hill.
Now, I bet there is no one over 30 years old who is surprised to read that.
Is there any interest group at all anywhere that does not try to BUY their agenda from a politician? Why should the fopros be any different? Is it right? No. Do non-profits do it? You betcha.
The loan industry and proprietary institutions have given almost $1 million to the 49 members of the House Commitee on Education and Workforce. And, to noone's surprise all 49 of them accepted the money.
Lawmakers say that their fund raising does not affect their decision making....
Ouch - that hurt - I had to get off the floor after I read that.
Lawmakers also say that their constituents do not affect their decision making. Lawmakers do not vote as a representative of their constituents, rather they vote and then tell their constituents what it is the majority of them thinks. Something is backward here, but I am off topic.
About every five or six years there is a reauthorization legislation of the higher-education policy....Surprise! Every five or six years there are giving spikes as well.
In 1977 the federal student loan program lent $4 billion to about 1.5 million students.
In 1993 the program provided $20 billion to abt 4 million students.
Today - more than 6 million students and their families receive abt $50 billion.
Yep, where there's money there's people trying to get more of it anyway they can.
What do you think?
