Non-profits spend considerable effort cultivating donors - tapping successful alumni - wining and dining on the taxpayer's dime, in hopes of getting more gifts - freebies - for which they will not be accountable.
There is often an alumni association, a donor development office or some other entity whose purpose is to find givers. The president, deans, members of the faculty and even students sometimes have to get in on the action.
After someone gives to the school, they are often satisfied by having a lab room named after them and a tax right off.
However, hunting down donors (not the blood kind) is not un-like looking for investors. The difference is in what happens after the money has been given.
