Did I ever say that I hate unions. I still do.
The American Auto Industry is NOT a model of profitability. My sister site www.panasianbiz.com has touched on that not a few times.
A lot of the auto industry's problems have to do with the labor movement. Salaries went up, costs went up...everybody wanted as much as they could get and give back as little as possible - ah, the American way.
What is one of the major causes of increasing costs at the traditional colleges - higher salaries. No surprise there, eh?
Still, some say that the possibility of forming a union to destroy the forpo industry is 'nil.' Staff and faculty are too spread out, especially because of the online format. Faculty live everywhere and most of them are contractors.
But...but...Kaplan University faculty members have begun to make known they are trying to form a union - for academic freedom, they say. (right!)
The organization working with the profs at Kaplan is ---- the United Auto Workers.
I think the chances of the UAW creating a better situation for Kaplan profs and her students is NIL.,
What do you think?

The root cause of the union problem is not the salaries but the benefits. Health care is killing GM, that is not the unions fault. In education no one has a problem with high paid teachers. They have a problem with high paid incompetence.
People will be forming into niche groups more and more, that means unions will only grow.
The key is to seperate the wheat from the chafe. And for unions to change their benefits to fit the times.
(nice blog on a great topic by the way)
