$8 million to be a Teacher

The US Department of Education recently awarded 20 grants totaling $7.866 million in a program called Transition to Teaching.

The purpose of the grants is to help high-need schools recruit and retain highly qualified mid-career professionals, paraprofessionals and college grads who did not focus on education.

But why aren't retirees eligible?

Teachers are most likely the single most important factor in students' academic success. Still, so many schools don't have qualified teachers...espcecially in math and science.

The US DOE program provides five-year grants to FOPROS and Non-profits alike.

The aim is to develop approaches to:

1. Train

2. Place

3. Support

teachers who are in or are heading to high-need schools and districts.

California, Florida, and Texas are getting the biggest chunks of this pie.

If education is the solution, qualified teachers and motivated students are the incredients.

$8 million is not much in the grand scheme of things, but it's a start.

What do you think?

I think it's sad that it has come to this, but we have to start somewhere with improving the state of education in this country. Maybe this will startle some folks into paying attention. We can hope.
