Faculty cost more schools more money regularly than any other expenditure. If there is no one in front of the students, then nobody is learning and the business of school is not being done.
However, at traditional universities faculty are released from one third to one half of their teaching time to other things such as:
1. research
2. administration
3. faculty meetings
4. faculty counsels
5. faculty service
They do other things besides interact with the students, and well, teach.
Faculty who make great discoveries add to the prestige of the school. This is a real contribution in a research oriented university.
However, if the faculty member is not teaching, then who is in front of the students and how much are they costing?
In short - faculty cost more than anything else in an educational institution and they cost more in a non-profit university.
What do you think about that?
