Maine normally gets a single application for a new college every five years or so.
It has received two in the past month.
Both proposed colleges could add jobs to the US' most northeastern state and one could add to Maine's reputation as a location for weirdos and other artist types.
I say artists are weirdos because I have one for a son. But then, he probably thinks I am way out there. But, I am off topic.
One college, Founders College, will be devoted to classical liberal arts education in small classes and a curriculum that emphasizes history, economics, politics and philosophy. Of course, writing and critical thinking will be at the heart as well.
The other college, will be the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts - um, a PhD in Art, I suppose. Do they do that? Who is going to teach it?
Both schools want to make money.
The Founders College plans to market a very selective group of students from around the world - read, they want rich eccentric types to come or send their kids.
Founders college will join two other FOPROS in the area - Andover College and Beal College.
In 1996, there were 304, 465 students enrolled in forpros. In 2004 that number became 880,247 according to thje National Center for Education statistics.
Founders wants in on that action.
Oh, and if they succeed in getting the $26.4 million they need to buy the 387 acre site they are looking at, Maine can expect a lot of money to be added to the tax coffers.
What do you think about that?
