Inside Higher Ed :: Where the Jobs Are reports that the number of fulltime jobs at higher ed institutions grew by only 14.3% between 1993 and 2003.
Compared to that, the number of part-time positions grew by 43.7% or more than three times as much. The number of faculty overall increased by 26.4%.
But, the number of executive and managerial jobs grew by 28.1% and the number of instructional/research assistant jobs grew by 44.9%.
Professional and service support jobs grew by almost 50%!
So, what does this mean?
It looks like students are paying much more for support services and management and getting less in the quality of classroom instruction....UNLESS...you believe the FOPRO hype.
Fopros hire professionals who are actively working in their fields to teach on an adjunct basis.
The philosophy might be they can teach professionals how to teach, but you can't always teach a teacher how to be a professional. Makes sense to me.
What do you think?
