If this doesn't sound like some stupid California approach to the universe, I don't know what does.
In 1996, voters - that's all of us who took the trouble to go to the polls - voted to outlaw the use of race in admissions decisions.
The result ten years later is that UCLA has half the number of first year black students that it did 10 years ago. Abt. 100, down from 200.
The Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies is calling it 'resegregation.'
UC Berkeley's answer to this nonsense is 'consideration for a student's achievements in the context of their life experience.'
Vice Chancellor for student affairs at UCLA calls it a 'holistic approach.' We have stores in downtown Campbell that sells candles that can be lit while admissions officials make their decisions, too.
One former UC regent calls UCLA's response 'racially motivated' rather than a response to help the whole student body.
Sounds like that to me, too.
The way I understand it NO UC school can refuse admittance to any qualified student. Study, pass the tests, submit the application, get the recommendations, apply and go. What difference does the color of the application make?
What do you think?

I say that if you are going to do away with affirmative action, you have got to beef up elementary and secondary education for minorities.
