Measuring Up 2006: The Nation's Report Card on Higher Education reports that China currently has about 16 million students enrolled in higher education.
This number represents about 20% of the student age population, double what it was just 7 years ago.
However, China has a growing graduate unemployment problem...too many graduates and not enough jobs for them.
This seems strange to me in that Chinese companies are so lacking in managers.
Beijing is now calling for a more modest growth in the student population of 5% annually - still 700,000-900,000 students each year.
Private institutions as well as public national and provincial institutions are springing up to accomodate the new students and funding comes from tuition.
Public funding is targeted towards research and key disciplines. China wants to make a few of her higher ed institutions world class as soon as possible and at all cost.
China turns out some of the world's highest quality science and engineering students each year.
It seems we can expect that trend to continue for many years to come.
