The Education Department released its findings on post secondary institutions. The full report can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2006/2006152.pdf. The decade covered in the report is from 1993-2003.
The statistics on salary inequity ought to make the better looking half of the US public pretty angry.
There is not one post secondary institution that pays its women employees the same salary that it pays its men. In some cases it has even gotten worse in the past 10 years.
Overall women made 75% of the salary of their male counterparts in 1993. In 2003 it made a whopping 2% increase. So much for our schools setting an example, eh?
The best chance a woman has of making the equal of her male counterpart is at 4-year private for-profit schools where the salary disparity is 87% up from 75% ten years ago.
The worst chance for women is at public 4-year institutions where they make just 75% of their male conterpart's salary virtually unchanged in the past 10 years.
Black women come closest to making the equivalent of black men at 89% of their salary but that figure is DOWN two points from 10 years ago.
The bottom line - were not paid equally 10 years ago in higher ed jobs, and it has seen minimal change since.
It seems to me that our post-secondary institutions should be setting an example here...and they are...it's just the wrong kind of example.
What do you think?

Hmmm...That is a sad message. I hope I am around to see the day when females are paid what they are worth. No matter what, we all know that a women's worth is measured by more than her paycheck:) Thanks for the thought provoking post.
