It is one thing to be prepared for college, to have a college nearby, to know that you have a good chance of finishing, to know your education will make a difference and another to be able to afford it.
Measuring Up 2006: The National Report Card on Higher Ed graded the states on their affordability.
The top six:
3 - 6 Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, New Jersey (D!)
2 - 1 Utah and California (C-)
Imagine the top six colleges in the states could manage nothing better than a C-! And California still charges ungodly tuition/dorm prices of over $20K for public schools! What is it like for the rest of the country?
The bottom 44!
Washington state managed a D-.
The other 43 states got an F in affordability. More than 80% of the states make it unreasonable for students to pay for their college education!
There is something wrong with this picture. The higher ed system is broken.
I think it starts with faculty who do NOT do what they are called upon to do.
What do you think?
Measuring Up 2006: The Nation's Report Card on Higher Education gives grades to each state in various categories:
1. Preparation - how well the state prepares its high schoolers to go to and finish college
2. Participation - how accessible are college level courses and training to young people and working-age adults
3. Completion - how successful are students at finishing what they start
4. Affordability - how feasible is it for families and individuals to pay for schooling
5. Benefits - how does this education help the individual make a better contribution to their state
