We don't have enough students. We have too many students. Is there any way to appease the traditional universities?
The San Jose Mercury News reported that the University of California campuses are expecting to see at least 4000 more new students this year than the number of new freshmen last year.
The schools say that they won't have an accurate count of the number of students until October! Say what?
I know about drop outs, and second/third week no-shows and all that. But, I can't imagine a school NOT knowing how mayny students were going to come...especially one that closes registration 10 months BEFORE!
Not only do the UC schools have students paying ungodly sums to sit on steps next to students in real chairs, they 'hope' that some will drop out so they can actually accomodate the ones who remain.
The Mercury news told of one class at UC Berkeley that limited the number of students to 720!! That and more than 150 turned up in hopes of getting a seat but, were turned away.
Something is seriously wrong with the UC system if they cannot predict 10 month's in advance who will be showing up to class and then not be ready for the ones who do.
