Today, Elia Powers had an in depth posting on how potlickers are making the business of education their business, of course, in hopes of getting elected or re-elected.
Powers points out several issues that the candidates make a fuss about in hopes of persuading the college student and his/her parent.
1. College affordability is one - no one can afford college anymore. Student loan fronts are enjoying the situation but no one else is.
2. Need-based financial aid - where to draw the line and who can qualify is always a hot topic.
3. Community college support - to give or not to give more to adult education in response to the need for more job training.
4. Brain Drain - States want to recruit brains from other states, and they don't want to lose their own. Some want to let overseas students in and others want to keep them out so there is more room for their own students.
5. K-20 councils - plans for connectinng high schools and businesses to colleges
6. Credit transfer - interconnecting community colleges with four year colleges within the states.
36 governor positions are up in this next election. The man or woman who can satisfy the majority of student and parents in his/her state on these issues is likely to come out a winner.
