The US Education Department has released figures on crimes on college campuses.
The number of criminal offenses are on the rise. Is this because there are more students going to school, because our law enforcement is getting better at catching them or because the students are generally lower caliber students.![]()
The bad news -
The number of on campus burglaries is up - 2004 (30,451) - 2003 (20,689)
The number of on campus criminal offenses for arson is up from 2003 - 1,043 to 2004- 1,059, but down from 2002 - 1,103
The number of forcible sex offenses is up - 2004 (2,649) - 2003 (2,609) - 2002 (2,350)
The good news -
The number of motor vehicle thefts is down - 2004 (6,408) - 2003 (6,650)
The number of aggravated assaults is down 2004 (3,009) - 2003 (3,026) Down a whopping 17 incidents.
The number of robberies is down - 2004 (2,060) - 2003 (2,123) the second year in a row of decline. So, is campus security getting better or has electronic security kicked in?

I have a kid going to college now....I reckon he should keep his things nailed down, stay away from matches and watch out for the girls, eh?
Things are improving on our campuses AND they are getting worse.
What do you think?
