This is a switch. It is quite often the Chinese student who wants a scholarship so they can study abroad. China's Ministry of Education has stated that foreign students should make up 10% of all students at Chinese universities by 2020.
Fudan University in Shanghai already has 2,800 foreign students from 80 countries making up 7% of its student population.
That number is about to grow.
Fudan University is offering scholarships worth 1 million yuan ($125,000) to be given to 22 foreign freshmen, 30 elite foreign students already enrolled and 19 foreign students who excell in volunteer work.
Tuition (abt $3,000-$7,000) for the scholarship winners will also be free.
Fudan plans to teach some postgrad programs in English only - medicine, math and software - hoping to make classes more appealing to foreign students who have already mastered English.
Kudos to Fudan for trying to draw in students rather than send them overseas.
