Students generally take the Scholastic Aptitude Test www.sat.org (SAT) or the American College Test www.act.org or both and submit the results when applying for college.
More and more that approach is being challenged.
The National Center for Fair & Open Testing has a list of more than 700 accredited colleges that grant bachelor's degrees that do NOT require the SAT or ACT. Of course, it might be concluded that these schools do not have competitive admissions either.
The alternative to SAT is the Portfolio Path. For example - Lewis and Clark College Lewis & Clark Portfolio Path requires prospective students to submit two samples of writing, one sample of quantitative/scientific work and one student choice.
Some, perhaps many, students are not good test takers though they might otherwise be good quality motivated kids. The portfolio path is a reasonable alternative I think.
However, can you imagine a Harvard or a Stanford or a UC school getting 30,000 science projects, 60,000 essays and ...well, the picture is clear.
So far the SAT is winning. Only 7.5% of students opt for the portfolio approach.
And the colleges and universities are happy.
