Covering the business of education and training

Peking (Beijing( University received a donation (173.3 million yuan - $21.9 million - nice round numbers) from a Singaporean billionaire. The president signed a donation contract with the daughter of the late banker making the gift from the inheritance fund. The whole scenario reminds me of just how much prestigious universities in China are like their American counterparts. 1. It's the presitigious universities in China and the U.S. that receive such huge gifts from benefactors. What about the little guys, the up-and-coming? 2. Beijing U. will spend most of the gift on sports - a gymnasium and a table tennis arena for the 2008 Beijing games. Uh...has that ever happened in America? 3. The students get second dibs on the gifts - after the Games and after their studies. 4. The facility will be named after the giver - Khoo Teck Puat, before he died in 2004, was the richest guy in Singapore, worth some $448.3 million. Some things are the same everywhere, especially in institutions of higher learning. Are sports the only thing that students at a university can benefit from? Why not pour the money into another university and raise its level? What do you think?
