The student recited pi to 67,890 digits. That is 50 numbers per line, 40 lines per page = 34 pages of random numbers he memorized.
And for good reason, too.
Some ancient Chinese mathematician is credited with discovering pi so, the
student said, Chinese should win the pi recitation contest. A Japanese fellow set the previous record of 42,195 digits (the number of meters in a marathon) in 1995.The Chinese boy spent 10 hours a day everyday memorizing and practicing during his summer vacation.
This record will do wonders for dispelling the stereotype of Asian math nerds, eh?
