Beginning in 1993 a group of 35 business executives started cleaning toilets in a school in Gifu prefecture. The group -Nihon wo Utsukushiku Suru Kai (Make Japan Clean Group).

At first the group was rejected by most for fear they were some offshoot religious group. However, 13 years later, 100,000+ people are cleaning commodes.

An unexpected benefit was one school in Hiroshima prefecture found the cleaning exercise a cleansing experience for juvenile delinquency.

Another school in Fukuoka claimed a 'sense of achievement' as well as shiny shi.., er, pots.japanese toilet.jpg

Toilets get rid of impurities in the body and toilet cleaning is said to remove evil thoughts.

The students do the deed in barefeet and with their bare hands.

They just need to be reminded to wash before they hand in their school papers.
