Sigh!
Of course the union side is touting it as a first step towards better salaries, more respect and greater control of the direction their careers will take.
But, not everyone thinks unionizing is a good idea.
Another UC campus, er, campuses, the University of California, have set up a forum where postdocs can voice their opinion AGAINST the unionizing activities.
Some exerpts...
"...sincerely believe that they are trying to pull a fast one on us. We are the ones with the brains..." UCD
"...I ended up not signing a card because the rep wasn't able to answer my questions..." UCSF
"...To my question as to why there is no material available online for regarding this campaign, he replied "that they do not prefer this way of informing people for their reasons..." UCSF
"...I too had a weird experience with one of these union reps... I found him wandering through the lab. When I asked him if I could help him he said he was looking for a specific post doc, but he would not say who he is was and what it was regarding." UCLA
"...WHY ARE UNION REPRESENTATIVES USING ALL KINDS OF DISHONEST TRICKS TO GET POSTDOCS TO SIGN?" UCD
"...was definitely misled by the person who came by our lab. She said that by signing the card, I was just expressing interest in information about a post-doc union..." UCD
"...the lack of any tangible document stating what they actually want to do, and her whole evasive and smoothtalking manner, had all the markings of con artistry to me...." UCSB
So, unions for postdocs...
What do you think?
