Japan has about 135,000 foreign students studying Japanese. Somehow, I thought there would be more Japanese going overseas to study than there would be foreigners coming to Japan.
That is not the case.
According to the Ministry of Edcuation, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan sent 79,400 students overseas in 2002.
So, where do Japanese students go to study?![]()
The top ten.
10, Austria - 264
9. New Zealand - 502
8. South Korea - 721 - twenty times as many South Koreans come to Japan to study.
7. Canada - 1,460
6. France - 1,483
5. Germany - 2,317
4. Australia - 3,271
3. U.K. - 5,741
2. China - 16,084 - about one-fith of the number of Chinese in Japan...though Japan has one-tenth the overall population of China. Who is making the more concerted effort to communicate, I wonder?
1. U.S.A - 45,960...more than all the other countries combined and 8 times as many students as those from the US coming to Japan.
Five of the top ten are English speaking countries and the Japanese, bless their hearts, still canNOT speak English.
What do you think?
