Covering the business of education and training

In an attempt to end or at least make a dent in rural poverty, China will waive the  school fees for 150 million children.

The shortfall amounts to about $1.9 billion a year.

Children from rural provinces who have made their way to the city will still have to pay.

China's rural families average about $367 each year according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The move is an attempt to bridge the gap between the Chinese making a killing on the coast and those who are stuck out west.

Education is supposed to be free for 6-15-year olds. But local authorities, also strapped for money, impose extra fees and education taxes.
