MIT has $8.4 billion in endowment. Last year the college saw a greater return on investments from its endowments than any other college/university in the nation.

Three schools saw a return of more than 20%

1. MIT - 23% - 17.6% in 2005

2. Yale - 22.9% - 22.3% in 2005

3. Duke - 20.2% - 18.1% in 2005

Three more schools were over 19%

1. Stanford - 19.4% - 19.5% in 2005

2. Notre Dame - 19.4% - 19.1% in 2005

3. University of Chicago - 19.2% - 18.1% in 2005

Four schools saw a return of 16% or better

1. Columbia - 18.4% - 17.7% in 2005

2. Nortwestern - 17.5% - 15.1% in 2005

3. Harvard - 16.7% - 19.2% in 2005

4. University of Michigan - 16.3% - 19.1% in 2005

5. Cornell - 16.1% - 13.6% in 2005

The average return for the top 25 schools...16.2%.

The worst school....University of California at 11.6%
