Do people still do that? I mean sit in trees...not chase out squatters who set up tents, barbecue grills and such.
The police say they were trying to clean up the area. The lawyers for the tree huggers say their clients were being harrassed.
The trees say, get out.
As soon as the police got rid of the camping gear, backpacks, barbecue grill, tables, chairs, food and two laptops...abt 50 people rallied and pledged to bring in more stuff and rebuild.
Say what?!
The university is planning on removing 42 oaks, redwoods and other trees to build an athletic training center to bolster the football program...
Okay, my argument is going to weaken tremendously now. I have no love for universities that dump money into atheletic programs when students are paying out the wazoo just to attend class.
However, I wonder...do the six squirrley students NOT go to class, take tests, turn in papers and such? How can they get away with living in a tree?
Why can't people reason with one another?
But, then, we are talking about Berkeley....
what do you think?

This article was written by someone entirely clueless; not a shred of actual info about the important work these brave tree-sitters are doing, and even assumes that they are students ditching class! Did he make this stuff up in his head, or does random conjecture now pass as fact? The trees stay. Local Berkeley kids use it for a playground, they have for 120 years, and you can see kids playing there any sunny afternoon after school is out. Just because the Univ. holds "title" to the land DOES NOT mean that they have the right to do whatever they want with it. Live Oaks are endangered and protected by law, as are Berkeley's open public spaces, which this has ALWAYS been!
