The 13-year old special ed student quoted the principal, who had pulled him into her office - "She said, `You don't have the brains to do it. You're gonna go to the first round and get eliminated and make the school look bad.'"
The student beat out 12 students in his class. No other classes sent challengers making him the school champion.
The prinicpal organized a schoolwide spelling bee, but when the winning student and runner-up declined to compete in the next round, the second runner-up, another special ed student was not permitted to advance.
The principal hid behind a spokeswoman who said that since the winner and runner-up didn't want to compete, she (the principal) decided no one would go to the districtwide bee.
I've been in education for a long long time. One of the first lessons I learned was to NEVER tell a student want they canNOT do.
The principal would have flunked my class on student motivation.
What do you think?
