Covering the business of education and training

A survey was conducted by the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) to determine which schools were the best schools to work at for junior faculty.

The survey considered the following categories in assessment:
#     tenure, clarity and fairness;
    
# nature of work: workload, research and teaching environment, quality of students;
    
# effectiveness of key policies (e.g., mentoring, childcare, and leaves);
    
# compensation;
    
# work and family balance;
    
# collegiality;
    
# overall satisfaction.

Five universities and one college were exemplary in four categories - Auburn, Brown, Ohio State, Stanford and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign...and Davidson.

Two univerisities and two colleges were outstanding in three categories - Dartmouth, University of Virginia and Goucher and Kenyon.

Two universities and four colleges were outstanding in two categories - Harvard and Kansas, and Denison, Hamilton, Macalester and Wabash.
