China and India produce far more engineers and scientists than the U.S. largely because women in those countries aren't influenced by the same stereotype.
Only 18% of 78,200 engineering degrees went to women in 2003-04, the same as in 1998 and up just 2% from 1996.
Georgia Tech, as an example, had only 97 women in 855 engineering majors. For women wanting an MRS degree with a slob...engineering might be the right choice.
Companies want women in their engineering departments...they want a diverse organization...they want better collaboration.
In other words, the geeks might...big MIGHT...talk among themselves more if there were a soft feminine voice to listen to.
So, why don't women enroll in engineering programs? Or I should ask, why don't more American women enroll in such programs?

I think that those who have analyzed the China numbers have concluded that the number of qualified engineers produced each year is actually way less than in the U.S.
