Greg Mortenson, author and humanitarian says
"In some of the remotest villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan, anti-American organizations are educating children to become the next generation of terrorists."
The best way, he says, to combat that is to educate the kids in the villages elsewise.![]()
Why:
1. When building schools, one can build trust.
2. Education disempowers the extremists who control illiterate society
3. In Pakistan and Afghanistan, conflict is resolved not in the court room or by might, but by discussion among tribal leaders.
4. Edcucating girls is crucial - a boy will leave the community. A girl will educate her children. It may take a generation or two, but change can happen. Why not start now?
5. If children are in school, they can't be used as human bombs.
There is reason for hope. Just five years ago there were only 800,000 children in school in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Now, there are more than 4.2 million.
Still, there are a lot more children to education.
Do you think education will eliminate terrorism?
I do.
