The University of Illinois announced that 81 years of tradition will end next week.
Buckskin-clad Chief Illiniwek will dance no more after that....unless a judge decides otherwise.
The two students who take turns as the chief have filed a lawsuite against the university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The students are seeking a restraining order to prevent UI from dumping the mascot and cause the NCAA to lift sanctions against the sport's teams.![]()
"Retiring the chief would be a victory for those who have pressured the university for years to dump the mascot, which they say is humiliating and creates a hostile environment on campus."
Opponents to those idiots say "it is a revered tradition that honors Native American culture."
More at the root of the problem is a possible dip, huge plunge?, in alumni donations who have enjoyed the tradition.
At this point, the population is large enough that there will ALWAYS be some group who will be offended by something that someone does somewhere.
UI could make teddy bears their mascot, no? But then the association to prevent humiliation to stuffed animals (APHSA) filed a suit.
Can't we all have a little bit thicker skin?
