Last September the University of Virginia launched a $3 billion campaign. Come one, come all...give us what you got.
The Philip Morris Company has stepped forward to offer up the largest single corporate gift to date ....$25 million. $20 million will support research and projects to help prevent youth smoking, improve the effectiveness of smoking-cessation efforts and to reduce the harm caused by smoking.
It would be too idealistic to ask the company to just stop making smokes altogether, I suppose.
$5 million will support the area of leadership development, recruitment and critical business issues that are expected to arise in the future.![]()
Is there a contradiction here? Or is it just me?
Is Philip Morris just buying good will? Do they know that people will continue to smoke no matter what...as long as the cigs are available?
"Between 1999 and 2006, Philip Morris USA has provided grants in excess of $176 million to schools, school districts and youth-focused organizations across the United States to help them implement programs that help young people develop confidence and avoid risky behaviors, such as smoking."
It smells like casinos giving money to states for education and lottery money being turned around to invest in other state projects.
Is it right to capitalize on an addiction of others?
That seems to me to be what is going on here.
What do you think?
