Harvard missed out on a $115 million gift from Oracle founder to build a public-health institute.
Bill Gates wants that institute to be at the University of Washington. He has a gift for the school of $100 million.
Together with the institute, UW hopes to steal some top Harvard talent as well.
The deal is not final, and some state money is likely to be sought, but everything is on track to catapult Washington state, Seattle and the University of Washington to the top rung of global-health research.
The cast at Grey's Anatomy has sent in their resumes, I heard.
Seriously.
Hat's off to Bill Gates and his foundation, like Jerry Yang of Yahoo! for wanting to make a difference in the world and taking practical steps by dipping into their own resources to do something.
If you had $100 million to give, what would you like to do with it?
