The Penn State side said, "In agreeing to settle the case, the defendants continued to dispute the player's claims and did not admit liability."

It seems to me that Penn State was able to realize that it was better to give the girl some money than to keep paying the lawyers.
The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and their co-counsel agreed.
If a party is right...there is no need to settle.
