In his first year as head coach, the Badgers had their best record ever - 12-1. Good job! Coach.
His team beat Arkansas 17-14 in the Capital One Bowl and brought home $4.25 million just for showing up. More kudos.
The Board of Regents decided that one year was enough for them to make their decision.
They rewarded him with a five year contract and these words of wisdumb - "Yep, we will pay you $7.5 million."
A board rep explained - "We're recognizing where this market (coaches' salaries) is going. We'd like him to stay, and we'd like to avoid a bidding war in the future. We thought both reward and prudence dictated that we give him a significant raise with the idea that in the long-run this is in everybody's interest."
Everybody's interest? I don't think so.
In a previous post, I noted that Wisconsin graduated just 62% of their football team, and 44% of its African American players compared to a 79% overall student-athlete graduation rate.
If the coach were worth his salt and the Board had any sense they would spend more money ensuring more kids graduated.
What do you think?
