18 College Grads from Susquehanna University Contract Cancer Before Age 30
And they thought they went to school to get an education. It appears they got much worse.

The Patriot-News is reporting that 18 people who attended Susquehanna between 1990 and 2001 have developed cancer....before turning 30 years old.

Altogether 40 cases of cancer have been discovered that are in Selinsgrove. Of those, 21 people lived in an off-campus area that had leaking underground storage tanks containing benzene.susquehanna.jpg

Denials and reversals at first....now a full-blown investigation. Later tons of lawsuits and lawyers getting rich...and people dying much too soon because of someone's foolishness.

It makes us wonder who else has what else stored where else....

And the kids just thought they went to school to get an education.

What do you think should be done in a case like this?

So you want to jump on the bandwagon as well, without any actual investigation yourself? Figure you can take ONE article for its face value and use it for hype? I LIVED IN THE SO CALLED "CONTAMINATED AREA" FOR 5 YEARS AS A CHILD, I NOW ATTEND SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY AND WILL GRADUATE THIS SPRING! My health is excellent, and I have not had any problems WHATSOEVER! Did you read the article!? You can make the statistics say whatever you want, especially cancer rates. So many people get cancer all you have to do is track down enough people that over the years have been in one place and of course you are going to find a "correlation" of people that get cancer. If you start with a result you can always construct a cause. This is the exact reason I HATE NEWS MEDIA. They look for a good story and not the facts. Thanks for continuing the trend!

The article in the Harrisburg "Patriot News" was an attempt to sell more newspapers at the expense of a small town and college. SHAME ON YOU!!!! It's no wonder that the public in general does not trust the media! The college population is a transient population which does not reflect the population of the region as a whole. There has been no increase in cancer rates in the borough of Selinsgrove in the vacinity around the warehouse or surrounding communities. Way to go with no factual information!

The only thing articles such as this have done is spur a mass of worry by current parents and students, as well as put a glaring blemish on the University's name. I am also an SU student, living on Orange Street. I have been assured by my school that I am safe, and until I have personal reason to believe otherwise, I am not going anywhere. I have been doing my own research, of all the articles, op-eds, and editorials, as well as published reports of this whole mess, and it seems that this article has taken to the trend of only publishing what they know will sell. Death sells. Anger sells. Fear sells. Congratulations, I hope your ratings and circulation have increased, meanwhile the students and town residents of Selinsgrove and Susquehanna University will have to deal with the fallout of your sloppy reporting. Thank you for that.

I attended S.U. as an environmental major between 1989 and 1993. I believe that the papers are sensationalizing the information. Yes, benzene in gasoline is a known carcinogen. However, it is often difficult to pinpoint the cause of cancer because of the many variables pertaining to dose, frequency of exposure and length of exposure. In addition, the first signs of cancer can develop YEARS after the exposure...making it truly difficult to connect the cancer to the cause. Everybody needs to sit tight, let the data be collected and stop spreading false fear. S.U. is an excellent college with fine staff and awesome students. Stop the "junk scientific statements" that are not based on scientific fact. Wait for the data. Then draw conclusions. These stories are truly causing an impact for the future of Selinsgrove and Susquehanna University.

Just for the record, that supposed carcinogenic site is not even on the Susquehanna University Campus.

I will be going to SU in the fall. It's a lovely area up there and personally this 'cancer' thing isn't stopping me from getting what I want and going where I want to go. Any place anymore can lead to some type of illness; it's the way the world's got the environment. All I have to say is SU rocks!
