Sikh followers say the picture was offensive and inaccurate.
In the picture, Guru Nanak is wearing a crown and a close-cropped beard.
Sikhs wear turbans and do not shave. I met a Sikh once in Buffalo. He said that when he was a kid he would make his parents angry by CUTTING his hair...not letting it grow.
Sikhs also believe that thier founding guru would not have worn an ornate crown.
"The image is taken from a 19th century painting made after Muslims ruled India. The publisher used it because it complies with the company's policy of using only historical images in historical texts, said Tom Adams, director of curriculum for the Department of Education."
Oxford, the publisher, offered to replace it with "an 18th century portrait showing Guru Nanak with a red hat and trimmed beard. But Sikhs said that picture made their founder look like a Hindu."
250,000 Sikhs in California, the goofball state, are now looking at having NO picture in the texts.
Sikhs want a more modern representative image but the publisher is saying the images are inaccurate.
California's board also wants to cover the pictures with stickers.
So, since when did depictions of history become something we vote on? How is it that 21st century Sikhs can say, 'that's not the way it was, because we believe it wasn't that way.'
why not require the modern Sikh religious leaders to come up with another historically accurate picture and then replace it?
And, why in the world is California's Board of Educating bowing to these religious leaders? Cowards!
