Chinese universities have the largest number of students in the world, yet are in severe financial crisis. Education institutions in financial crisis. Sound familiar?
One school is so in debt that it must pay 300 million yuan in INTEREST each year on loans it has to banks.
In two fast growing provinces, Shandong and Jiangsu (home to Shanghai) university debt has execeed 10 billion yuan.
The total amount of debt owed by Chinese universities...nobody knows.
Nobody knows the answer to that in America either?!![]()
What other questions can nobody answer?
1. How much do the schools owe? Nobody knows.
2. How many students do universities need to make budget? Nobody knows?
3. How much should universities charge students in tuition to make budget? Nobody knows.
4. What is an appropriate salary level for faculty and administration so that the budget is not overextended? Nobody knows.
5. How much support material, gyms, theaters, admin building space, etc. is enough for students and staff without overextending the budget? Nobody knows.
6. How much money should be blown on sports and extra curriculars in order, my goodness, to better attract students, and still be able to make budget? Nobody knows.
7. How are the schools going to back their loans? Nobody knows.
8. How much money should local governments pour into universities to keep them afloat? Nobody knows
9. Why can't schools manage money properly? Nobody knows.
10. Why doesn't somebody hold the schools responsible for being such poor fiscal managers? Nobody know.
If misery does indeed love country, Uncle Sam and the Dragon are good partners.
