I am not sure why anyone would want two wives; one is surely enough.
However, China has a plan to prevent bigamy.
By 2010, China wants to have a nationwide database online of all marriages.
It is quite easy to get married in China...provided you can find a partner.
The Civil Affairs Ministry has ordered computers for branches at the county levels and higher so that records can be created to keep track of all the easy marriages.
For now, it's go to the registration office, then call your friends together for a dinnner (optional) and you are good to go.
Some officials in China think this oversimplified procedure has led to the Chinese not being serious enough about the marriage committment. Possibly so.
In addition to the new database, the Civil Affairs Ministry wants a marriage ceremony that will be presided over by an official who will ask the couple to take their vows...not a religious type at all.
In the future, the online database can be checked to see if either in the wedding party have made the step before AND properly dissolved the partnership before the second round.
And if that doesn't work...the new wife-to-be, can always follow her future husband home to see if anyone else is sleeping in his bed.
