
A 27-year old and a professor in mechano-infomatics at the University of Tokyo developed a robot that stands 155 cm tall and weighs 70 kilograms.
The humanoid, with limbs and a torso that are covered with synthetic skin and 1,800 censors pulled itself toward a human figure weighing just 4kg less than itself and picked the body up by pressing its knees against the bed where the figure was lying.
Until now, robots could only lift about 1/10th of its weight.
"If you install big motors (in the robots), then they're dangerous in homes. Each joint (of this robot) emits only a small amount of power, but by utilizing its sense of touch we were able to control the way it holds things, and succeeded in moving heavy objects," said the prof in charge of the project.
Okay, it's a long way before there are real humanoids that can do real human things, such as pick up a live body...but, dang it!, its not as long a way as it used to be thanks to these researchers in Japan.
Japan can do robots.
