A fact finding panel learned that the prof gave homework to be done over the summer. The Japanese school year goes from April to January at the college level and homework during the summer is not uncommon.
The 38-year old prof reminded the student in December that her work was past due. He sent another email in January telling her to turn in the work or repeat the grade.
The girl responded, "I know I'll have to repeat the same grade. I'll take my own life." She then threw herself into the Watarase River.
The factfinding panel concluded the homework was too difficult for the second-year student and that the prof's notice she would have to repeat the same grade forced her to take her own life.
Uh...No! The homework did NOT force the girl to kill herself. What about the other students in the classroom who could finish the assignment?
What is wrong with this panel and their conclusions?
It is the girl and her unfortunate decision to not seek help...with the homework and with her struggle for living...that led to her taking her own life. No?
