In the 1960s, the divorce rate began to climb...until the rate peaked in 1981 at 5.3 divorces per 1000 people (most all states adopting the no fault divorce is given credit)....then it headed downhill. Today, 3.6 people per 1000 call it quits.
Reasons:
1. The number of people living together has grown 10 times since 1960. If you don't make the committment, you can't break it. In my experience, however, breaking up with a live-in partner can be just as tramatic as divorce.
2. The number of people getting married now has dropped by 30% in the past 25 years - remarkable considering the growth in population over the same period.
3. Some say...there is an increased determination among couples to stay married...no facts, however.
4. Double income families with good jobs, an improved standard of living, leads to less tension and lower divorce.
5. More and more couples are on their second or third time around...divorce was no fun the first time so why do it again?
How about you? Why are you staying married?
