I have never run a marathon. I have run 100 miles in a day, 100km in under 12 hours but never a full marathon and then stopped. The distance is too short and the runners too fast. Same for distances below that.
However, I came across this 2 hr 37 min runner and coach's advice for beginning runners hoping to get in shape.
1. It is a very good idea to make an investment in a pair of actual running shoes. (Think $75-$125) The bigger the runner the higher the price.
2. If you are starting from a relatively inactive lifestyle, set reasonable/attainable goals and expect only modest progress early on. (However, once you are in a reasonable good condition, improvement comes fast and then measureable improvement slows way down.![]()
3. If you are starting to run in order to lose weight, do not start cutting calories until you are comfortable with your running program. (You will lose weight just because you are burning more calories.)
4. There is conflicting information out there regarding when to stretch and how often to stretch. (You mean after all these years it hasn't been worked out? Nope..If everybody knew the right way to do things, everybody would do it the same.)
5. Vary the routes that you run. (running is boring....very boring if you do it a lot).
The other three can be found here.
What are your running goals?
