The average cost for a year's college tuition is about 10,000 yuan or equal to a country peasant's average wage for the year.
The families pay for it by scrimping and borrowing from friends.
Now their kids can go to school for free if they will return to the countryside and give three years service.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
Mom and dad get a break. Junior gets an education. The countryside gets well-trained teachers. Beijing has a worthy target for its monies. And, it's only three years.
Be careful, however, because once you start teaching in the country, you are not likely to want to give it up.
Rich kids need not apply...their parents are not likely to let them do it anyway.
