China recognizes that the second Sunday in May in the Western World is Mother's Day.
However, scholars from the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Hebei Academy of Social Sciences among others want a purely Chinese flavored Mother's Day.
The second day of the fourth Lunar month is the day...this year May 18th, because it will coincide with the birth date of fourth century B.C. Confucian philosopher, Mencius, whose mother is the picture perfect of maternal devotion and love.
But, what happens next year when the second day of the Lunar month falls on a different day?
There is now an NGO called "Chinese Mothers' Festival Promotion Society" with the support of around 100 Confucian scholars and lecturers of moral ethics."
Not to be outdone by the west...."work has begun on a theme park of maternity culture in Zoucheng, the birthplace of Mencius."
Uh, sounds to me like they just want to make a whole lot of money off this idea of 'loving mom', no?
Countries like France, Egypt, South Korea, Portugal and Indonesia celebrate Mom in their own way...says one scholar. Why not China?
Seems to me that someone should ask the moms how they would like to be celebrated.
My guess is that most of them would rather the kids pick up their toys, clean their rooms and the husband pitch in with the house chores more often and that would be worth celebrating.

Chinese folks are starting to make a part of the world labeled with their name or set of cultures. They have their own New Year. They have their own way of celebrating other special occasions. For what purpose? Primarily, they want to perpetuate their Chinese practices. They don’t want any of their practice die with time. Although, this is coupled with some business objectives at least their primary purpose is to make their name known all over the world.
