I am a number nut, so I enjoy looking, anyalyzing, thinking...probably too much sometimes. Okay...too much...I admit it.
However, I have learned some things from Google Analytics and yesterday was a good chance for me to confirm it.
At the bottom of each post the our network automatically lists up Related Entries to the one that was just published.
However, for the past couple of weeks or so, I have been placing "you might also like" type posts within the body of my published post.
The result...at least 18% and as high as 75% of the readers are clicking through to other posts I have written.
In the past five days TheBizOfKnowledge received 75% of its visitors from RisingSunOfNihon. PanAsianBiz received 30% of its traffic from RisingSunOfNihon and RisingSunOfNihon received 18% of its traffic from PanAsianBiz.
Over these past five days that amounted to about 19,000 visitors and 38,000 more page views for my blogs.
This does three things for me:
1. gives me an 18-75% jump in visitors/page views = better exposure
2. exposes readers to other things I have written = we do like to get read, no?
3. gives me an ever so little bit of reassurance (something we writers, or is it just me, need) that what I am writing is interesting enough to hold people, to get them to want to read more and is NOT just something they stumbled upon in a search and then went away. It feels good and makes me want to write more.
It's a hassle and takes time to add to each post...and truthfully, I don't do it all the time.
I have a strategy for determining when I am more likely to do so, however...
I often check the entry pages on the site meter to see what is hot, what is bringing traffic to my sites, that is, what is being read - then I go back in to Moveable Type and add a link or two or three to that post. Result...I watch the page views increase a bit more than they might have.
