On a recent trip to Beijing, UC Berkeley chancellor, Birgeneau, offered some advice to Chinese parents wanting to send their children overseas to the school.
90% of UC Berkeley's undergraduate student body must come from California and only 4% can come from outside the U.S.
However...at the graduate and post-graduate level, there is no cap.
One-third of Berkeley's students at this level are international.
Berkeley has 2,500 students from outside the U.S. 60% of them are from Asia and China is one of the top three suppliers of students.
One-fourth of the undergraduate students at Berkeley are ethnically Chinese.
So, what does Berkely look for?![]()
1. scores on standardized tests
2. commitment to service to society
3. leadership abilities
4. innovation
The chancellor said, "A student who has shown evidence of real creativity will often be admitted over a student with much higher grades but who otherwise seems to be an only one-dimensional person."
Do you want to go to Berkeley? Want your kid to go there? Think four-dimensional.
Would you like to go to a school like UC Berkeley?
