The University of New Hampshire has conducted a study that concludes 18 – 24-year-olds are on the path toward chronic health diseases.
UNH looked at 800 undergrads in a general-education nutrition program.
1. - 33% of UNH students were overweight or obese.
2. - 8% of men had metabolic syndrome
3. - 60% of men had high blood pressure
4. - 70% of women were not meeting nutritional needs for iron, calcium or folate.
5. - 95% of women and 82% of men did not meet nutrient requirements for fiber.
6. - 23% of men did not exercise at all, 34% of women.
In short - "They’re not as healthy as they think they are,” says a UNH lecturer.
The good news, UNH students don't smoke as much as their peers AND their overweight were less than the national average of 40% for the college age group.
Kids in school....it's a great time to show them what's wrong with the way they eat and guide them to make life changes.
Perhaps they can go home and teach mom and dad a thing or two as well?
What has your college kid ever taught you?
Mine is in a nutrition program now and he fills my ears up every time we talk.
