My son scared me to death the other day.
He's a national caliber swimmer. He was also extremely stupid.
He called to let me know he swam across the Ohio River and back.
"With a life jacket on?"
"Nope, without a life jacket."
Furious is an understatement. Nobody is stronger than the river, or the ocean for that matter. In fact the people who are most likely to die in the water are the ones who think they won't.
It's true for little ones and parents who think their children are safe from the water.
5 Water Safety Myths
1. No pool at our house, so drowing is not an issue. An inch is all it takes for babies and toddlers making the bath tub, toilet and wading pools dangerous. My little sister almost died in a neighbor's little wading pool.
2. My 3-year old should take swimming lessons. Yeah, they can swim when they are little, and it looks cool on video, but they aren't smart enough yet to know what can hurt them. It's not just the water.
3. My nine year old has been swimming for 5 years. She's safe. Yeah, see how stupid my son was.
4. Water wings! All things that are fool proof eventually offer real proof that someone was a fool. Guard your kids.
5. Reading and talking on the phone won't distract me. By the time you finish reading this one minute blog...your child could be under the water, worse, dead if you don't know exactly where and when s/he went under.
Kids need to be guarded when they play around the water....period!
