Reccently, Niigata prefecture was hit hard by an earthquake.
The cities of Kariwa (actually it's a village), where the nuclear power reactors are, and Kashiwazaki were hit the hardest.
As a result about 2 percent of school children are now in need of psychiatric counseling. In Kashiwazaki, near the earthquake, the figure is 6.8%. In Kariwa, the heart of the earthquake, the figure is 10.8%.
Experts are expected to provide counseling to the children to keep them from
developing post-traumatic stress disorder.
My question is, who is going to counsel the kids who feel like they need to have a shrink at such a young age?
I've never been much of a fan of psychology,
therapy, psychotherapy, psychiatry...unless Frazier and Niles were doing the counseling. What is obvious is that kids are affected by disasters, too. And the little ones just aren't able to express themselves very well at saying how much they have been touched by events.
Do you think kids can benefit from counseling?
