I am at the age (half century+) where information on prostate cancer treatment is very welcome. Even knowing prostate cancer symptoms is interesting reading to me. And, especially because my father developed prostate cancer, was operated on for it, and died in recovery at the young age of 68. I don't want to go that early.
From the InternationalHIFU website I learned that HIFU is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound that 'uses the power of ultrasound to destroy deep-seated tissue with pinpoint accuracy for the minimally invasive treatment of Prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as, enlarged prostate.'
Amazing...startling....dumbfinding...are words that come to mind. 'About 20 years too late for my dad' are a few more.
I talked with my brother, (one year older than I), about getting his numbers checked. He wouldn't do it. I did and I am safe....for now.
There are six HIFU centers, two in Canada for the North Americans, Costa Rica, Caribbean, Mexico and South Africa are the others.
HIFU is in the third stage of FDA approval for the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States. But,..the treatment is available if in the United States if a patient is willing to enroll as a participant in a clinical trial. More than 200 already have.
The steps for scheduling the treatment can be found here.
If it can be treated...why wouldn't the patient want to give it a try?
Dang it! We just had a family reunion and everyone was there... except my dad. Had this treatment been available in the 80s, no doubt, there would have been much more of a fighting chance to still have him around. What fun that would be!
Perhaps the treatment is something that can make a difference in your life or someone you love.
