We all know about 'teachable moments' - those times when all the stars line up and your charge is, well, um, charged....ready to be taught.
Life is good, or bad....things are going well, or not....but for whatever reason your kid, your student, your mentee is in a position to learn and you are ready to teach.
What about teachable opportunities.
They, too, show up at the most unpredictable times and only work well if/when you are prepared.
My wife and I went out for dim sum after attending Sunday worship at church.![]()
We got there before the carts started getting pushed around so we decided to hang out.
In the back room there was a graduation ceremony going on. Being an educator and the curious kind I kind of
stood around with my 'wondering-what's-going-on' face. One thing led to another and the guy who was organizing the commencement ceremony and graduation party struck up a conversation with me...and invited my wife and me in to have lunch with them.
To make a long story short....'are you interested in teaching for us?' he asked me.
A 'teachable opportunity'?
We will meet this week and see what can be arranged.
Abe Lincoln said, "I will prepare and some day my chance will come."
Yup, the more we are prepared, even while planning to eat dim sum perhaps, the more the opportunities come.
My wife and I plan to go back next week to finally get our dim sum.
This week we enjoyed a feast and a job invite.
What are you prepared to do?
